Through Their Lens: How High School Students are Using Media to Reflect on God’s Word
April 27, 2026 • English
Students at Avail Academy in Minnesota are continuing to engage with the Today daily devotional in a thoughtful and creative way.
In art teacher Susan VanGeest’s classroom, students spend time with March and April devotions and then respond by taking photographs that reflect what stood out to them. Each image is paired with a short written reflection that captures how they are processing what they’ve encountered.
What’s striking isn’t just the creativity — it’s the attentiveness.
Rather than moving quickly from one devotional to the next, students are asked to slow down and look for connections. They begin to notice how the themes they’ve read show up in ordinary moments: in light, in contrast, in small details that might otherwise go unseen.
Through this process, Scripture becomes something they don’t just move through, but something they begin to recognize in the world around them.
The result is a collection of images and reflections that offer a glimpse into how students are interpreting and expressing their faith in real time. Their work reflects curiosity, observation, and a growing awareness of how God’s Word intersects with everyday life.
As you explore their photography and reflections below, we hope you’re encouraged by the ways these students are engaging Scripture — thoughtfully, creatively, and with open eyes — and perhaps invited to notice a little more, too.
