A New Community

There is no better place to see Spotlight’s hands-on service to listeners than at a Spotlight English Club (SEC).

Each week forty immigrants from all over the world meet with a ministry team from the London City Mission to practice English, developing relationships that could lead them to discover spiritual truths of God’s Word. This Spotlight English Club (SEC) in London, England is one of 47 clubs that have been started in more than 21 countries!

Working in partnership with ReFrame Media (the English outreach of ReFrame Ministries) and Words of Hope, the Spotlight ministry teams prepare simplified English programs for immigrants and refugees who desire to learn English. Volunteer Barbara Newsome helped develop the vibrant London SEC that has served students from 28 countries, including a large group of Pakistani Muslim women, an intergenerational family from Mongolia, and immigrants from nearly every continent!

“The northwest area of London is a high immigrant area,” notes Newsome. Newsome and her team of nine volunteers meet in small groups to help these immigrants read and practice learning English through the Spotlight audio recordings and printed transcripts. The club combines English classes for beginners along with listening and discussion for intermediate and advanced speakers.

“Through this, we build warm relationships with the participants, including offering to pray for specific needs as requested,” Newsome adds. Newsome also visits students who are ill, assists those who have practical needs, and organizes social events for the group.

Once each month the group shares a meal together. The participants bring food that reflects the wide variety of communities from which they come. The meal is also symbolic of the new community they are forming.

“The Spotlight English Clubs affirm the unique but thoroughly holistic approach of our ministry,” explains Robin Basselin, ReFrame Media’s lead Spotlight producer. “As Spotlight supports our listeners in their English learning and practice, we are also humbled to learn from them even as we share our Christian worldview.”
